U.S. Biomedical Industry Cyber Survey

The Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS), Office of Technology Evaluation, in coordination with other key federal cyber partners is undertaking a limited survey and assessment of the threats posed to the U.S. biomedical industry from malicious cyber actors. The principal purpose of this project is to gain an understanding of what the industry defines as its critical information, how it manages and protects it as well as what can the U.S. Government do to assist industry with this immense challenge.

Through the results of this assessment, both government and industry will be better informed to develop effective policy responses and investment strategies to mitigate the growing cyber security threat, and ensure the ability of biomedical companies to support critical national security and civilian requirements.

Strategic Materials Survey

The U.S. Department of Commerce, Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS), in coordination with the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD), Defense Logistics Agency (DLA), is conducting a survey and assessment to evaluate the supply chains associated with several materials considered important for DOD programs and systems. These materials include metals – magnesium and titanium; carbon fiber materials – polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-based fibers and bismaleimide (BMI) matrices; and rare-earth elements – erbium, terbium and ytterbium.

The principal goal of this assessment is to assist the defense community in understanding the health and competitiveness of key material suppliers, and to identify specific issues and challenges facing the U.S. industry. Information collected will include government and commercial revenue, financial and operational health, employment and skills, production capacity, research and development, unique capabilities and technologies, and other topics. The resulting dataset and report will assist DOD agencies in developing targeted planning and acquisition strategies designed to ensure the capability of the materials supply chain to support critical defense missions and programs.

The survey is designed to provide information on companies, universities, non-profits, and government agencies providing magnesium-related and/or titanium-related products. Your participation is vital to ensure a comprehensive dataset for the assessment.

Response Obligations

Diminishing Manufacturing Sources and Materials Shortages (DMSMS) Cost Metrics Survey

The U.S. Department of Commerce, Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS), in coordination with the Department of Defense's (DOD) Defense Standardization Program Office (DSPO) is conducting a survey and assessment of the costs associated with resolving Diminishing Manufacturing Sources and Materials Shortages (DMSMS) issues within DOD programs and systems. The data collected will be used to develop a report similar to the 2010 DMSMS Cost Metric Assessment, available on the BIS website. It will also be used to update the DMSMS Guidebook, SD-22, to meet the cost avoidance and should-cost reporting needs of program managers and DMSMS Management Teams across the defense community.

Obsolescence issues have become an increasingly important issue confronting a growing number of programs and systems as they move into a sustainment phase in their lifecycles. A better understanding of the costs associated with resolving these obsolescence issues is needed to more effectively manage the sustainment costs of critical programs and systems.

The survey is designed to provide information on companies, universities, non-profits, and government facilities supporting DOD programs and/or systems facing DMSMS-related issues. Resolutions to DMSMS issues have been divided into nine general solution categories including solutions such as simple substitute and redesign/system replacement. Your participation is vital to ensure a comprehensive dataset for the assessment.

Response Obligations

Your organization has been identified as providing DMSMS-related support for DOD programs and/or systems and is required by federal law, under 50 U.S.C. App Sec 2155, to complete this survey within 30 days.
