WASHINGTON/SAN JOSE -- The Commerce Department's Bureau of Export Administration's Update West '99 annual conference on export controls will be held at the Fairmont Hotel in San Jose, Feb. 9 and 10, 1999. The two-day seminar will provide opportunities for industry and government representatives to discuss current issues affecting U.S. exporters.
Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren (CA-16), whose district encompasses part of the Silicon Valley, will deliver the keynote address on Tuesday, February 9, at 12:15 p.m.. She will discuss the extraordinary challenges U.S. exporters face as they do business around the world.
Conference sessions will detail regulatory changes and examine a variety of international trade issues. As the premier federal export control program on the West Coast, attended by more than 400 people, it will focus on issues of particular interest to California high technology exporters.
Seminar topics include encryption controls, record keeping requirements, shipping obligations under the Chemical Weapons Convention, export enforcement issues, and defense industry competitiveness. Other sessions include an overview of international nonproliferation regimes, filing of export license applications via the Internet, and an explanation of current regulations companies need to be aware of when they hire a foreign national who will have access to sensitive technical data.
To attend any of the sessions listed on the attached agenda, local press credentials will be required. Cong. Lofgren's speech is scheduled for 12:15 p.m. on Tuesday, February 9.
