Commerce Department Under Secretary Kenneth I. Juster today announced the appointment of Karan K. Bhatia as Deputy Under Secretary for Industry and Security. In this position, Bhatia will advise and assist the Under Secretary in overseeing all aspects of Bureau management and policymaking, including the administration and enforcement of dual-use export controls, promoting the assurance of public and private sector critical infrastructures, ensuring compliance with U.S. antiboycott laws, and ensuring the viability of the U.S. defense industrial base.
Bhatia, an international lawyer, joined the Bush Administration as Chief Counsel for Export Administration in July 2001. Prior to that, he had been a partner at the Washington law firm of Wilmer, Cutler & Pickering, practicing in its international and corporate practice groups.
